Sri Lankan batsmen showed good form heading into the opening Test of their three-match series against the Windies, with an accomplished display against the Cricket West Indies (CWI) President’s XI at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba.

The game ended in a draw but not before the Sri Lankan batsmen recorded a century and four half-centuries. At around 3.25pm yesterday both teams decided to call off the game after Sri Lanka reached 135 without loss in 33 overs in their second innings. This, after they bowled out the Windies President’s XI for 272 in reply to their first innings effort of 428 all out.

Windies resumed on the third and final day yesterday on 223/7 and was bowled out for 272, as Rakheem Cornwall batted well to get an unbeaten 54. The Sri Lankan off-spinners Akila Dananjaya and Dilruwan Perera bowled well and got in some good work ahead of the Test. Dananjaya grabbed three wickets for 46 runs and Perera took 3/50. The pacer Lahiru Kumara took 3/47 as he bowled with pace and accuracy.

Sri Lanka with a lead of 156 runs on first innings, then took to the crease for the second time and openers Kushal Perera and Kushal Mendis smashed the bowling to all parts of the ground. The right hand/ left-hand duo found the going easy against the Windies bowlers as they each scored half-centuries.

Perera retired at exactly 50 following his 65 in the first essay. The left-hander faced 54 balls with seven fours and a six. Mendis who did not score in the first innings batted well and showed great form in the second getting 60 not out. The pint-sized right-hander got his runs from 113 balls with five fours and a six.

The Sri Lankans will continue their preparations at the Queen’s Park Oval this weekend before facing the Windies in the opening Test at the same venue on Wednesday.
