Skipper Chandimal starts with century

Sri Lankan captain Dinesh Chandimal made a wonderful start to his Caribbean campaign by scoring a century on the opening day of the tour against the Windies ‘A’ at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba yesterday.

The right-hander batsman hardly puts a foot wrong, as his team closed the first day of the three-day encounter on 318 for six. With the Test match just a week away at the Queen’s Park Oval, Chandimal used the opportunity to acclimatise to the conditions here in Trinidad.

Batting at the crucial number three position he came in after the early loss of Kausal Mendis for a duck to Miguel Cummins.

He and Kusal Perera batted well and added a century stand for the second wicket. The Windies ‘A’ bowlers laboured in the hot sun in South, as the two settled and plunder the bowling all over the outfield.

Windies ‘A’ got some respite when Perera fell for 65 off 93 balls with 10 fours and a six. Chandimal continued to bat well and reached his half-century as well. In partnership with Angelo Mathews, he brought up his century but soon after he was dismissed for 108 off 216 balls with six fours and three sixes.

After his departure, the former skipper Mathews, under a fitness cloud for this series, took over and continued to punish the bowling attack and looked good during his performance.

He timed the ball sweetly in getting to 41 off 110 balls with six fours. He fell to big Rakheem Cornwall, giving the Leeward Islands off-spinner his second wicket of the match, after his earlier dismissal of Perera.

Play resumes at 10 am this morning
