Trying times testing our faith
The continued fear remains yet again, as a nation which once had the honour of being ranked as the happiest island with the happiest people, stand tethered together by the unforgiving hands of criminal activity. As I cast my eyes across the screen to see one news article after the other stating “woman’s body found on highway walkover” and “soldier slain,” only reassured me of the country’s urgent need to eradicate the crime issue.
To make matters worse, it is unnerving to know that these inhumane acts are somehow becoming a norm, with each newscast being worse than the previous. It is unfortunate that we no longer live in a land where we could have the freedom to explore the island to our heart’s content simply because of the lack of repercussions that should follow when these despicable acts are committed.
Moreover, our society is now being robbed of that honour as we hide behind the closed doors of our homes in despair, wondering if the next step taken out of our houses would be our last. We are in the year 2017, where surely there should have been proper measurable procedures in place for everyone to adhere to, given the current circumstances.
Sadly, to date, progress in this area of combating crime has been greatly limited as advancement is a long distance away given the lawless demeanour of some citizens and government officials.
Too often, these crimes are hot headline news and a little while later, a mere fragmented memory, resulting in unnecessary cold cases with the suspect not being reprimanded and who remain free to roam among us. It is in these trying times that our lives, faith and courage are tested to a point where we must stand up as a people and demand for this to stop.
