‘We’ll send the patrol...’

From time to time, letters appear in the newspapers from aggrieved citizens stating their disappointment with the operatives at West End Police Station to complaints made.

I have my own litany with respect to that station, since I have called them from time to time to complain about excessive noise from bars in my area, especially in the nighttime and early morning hours, which disrupts my sleep.

The stock answer from the station is always “We’ll send the patrol”—a patrol that never seems to turn up.

On many occasions I have called at least three times in one night, with little or no response.

Over the past few weeks, we have had cars being driven in the Covigne Road and Spaniol Lands areas playing extremely loud and disturbing music, especially after 6 pm. This can go through to about midnight.

A call to the West End Police Station a few evenings ago to report the nuisance and to give the registration number of the chief offending car, resulted in the constable who answered the telephone telling me that I should call the station when the cars were passing.

Now, that was exactly the purpose of my call; reporting to the station that the cars were passing and disturbing the neighbourhood’s peace.

When I pointed this out to the constable, a long pause followed before he gave me the station’s stock answer: “We’ll send the patrol to check it out.”

Well, several more evenings have gone by and several more breaches of the peace have been committed by the nuisance cars in what used to be an extremely quiet neighbourhood and “the patrol” is yet to make its presence felt, yet the officers on the television programme will pretend not to know of these infractions and will also give that stock answer, “We’ll send the patrol.”

In the meantime, and if the patrol arrives to curb the situation, we’ll remain underprotected and underserved by our so-called “protectors” and “servers.”
